Sony Interactive Entertainment is celebrating a major milestone for one of its most celebrated franchises today, with God of War turning 18. Yep, Kratos first burst onto the scene on March 22, 2005, a few months before the PS3 was first unveiled to the world.
Anyway, God of War is the game that started it all. Here, we find a beardless Kratos hunting down and brutally slaying the Greek Gods for the loss of his beloved wife and daughter. The game was a technical showcase for the PS2 at the time, and proved hugely popular to boot, selling over 4.6 million copies worldwide.
Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe was the director behind the original God of War, and while he’s long since departed the series, much of the DNA that made the game work so well can still be felt today. God of War was rebooted in 2018 and the most recent entry arrived in November 2022 with God of War Ragnarok.
Happy Birthday God of War, here’s to another 18 years!
