Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – What Is It All About?
Perhaps the most important thing to realise about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is that it isn’t a remaster (we’ve already had one of those) or a remake of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but instead an entirely new game that indirectly continues the narrative threads that were seeded in 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and includes some of the characters that featured in Call of Duty: Warzone.
Set in late 2022, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign once more has players taking control of the various members of Task Force 141, a joint multi-national special operations unit formed by SAS Captain John Price as it seeks to eliminate a deadly global terrorist organisation that is hellbent on thrusting the world into war.
A furiously frenetic and cinematic first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 leverages the latest iteration of its graphics engine to provide the most spectacular entry in the long-running series yet.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Game Modes
In addition to the sprawling single-player campaign, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also allows players to take part in a revamped Special Ops mode which unfolds within the narrative established in the single-player campaign. In addition to those two modes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also boasts the following multiplayer game modes:
- Control
- Domination
- Free-for-All
- Ground War
- Hardpoint
- Headquarters
- Invasion
- Kill Confirmed
- Knock Out
- Prisoner Rescue
- Search and Destroy
- Team Deathmatch
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer – What’s New?
Bringing in new game modes and a range of fixes and tweaks to the series multiplayer offering, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 goes the extra mile with easily some of the best multiplayer modes the franchise has seen since its inception.
Arguably at the vanguard of this new approach is the Modern Warfare exclusive Special Ops mode which returns from its previous outing in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare back in 2019. An evolved take on the horde style mode that debuted three years ago, Special Ops evolves the experience with an experience that places a premium on tightly focused and tactical two player shenanigans (though only for online players – Special Ops doesn’t current support local split-screen play unfortunately).
With reworked enemy AI, a narrative that continues the story after the events of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign and a wide range of branching operations and missions, Special Ops looks like it’ll keep the momentum of the Modern Warfare 2 going far into the future, not least because larger (and most importantly, free) Special Ops raids are planned.
Beyond Special Ops, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also brings the new Invasion mode to the table, mixing up traditional Tea, Deathmatch combat with enemy AI foes to deal with in addition, lending a PvPvE dimension to a traditionally PvP experience. The implementation of AI enemies in this mode is just the tip of the iceberg however, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 allows players to fight against AI foes across a swathe of its multiplayer modes, allowing wannabe professional players get their practice in before hopping online against flesh and blood opponents.
Away from the new and improved modes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 boasts, so too has the base gameplay seen a wealth of improvements. Traversal has been greatly improved, allowing players to dive while running to escape incoming fire, while a ledge hanging manoeuvre allows savvy players to open fire while attached to a wall surface. Brilliantly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 now also enables players to lean through open car windows to open fire and if they get bored with that, mantle up onto the car roof top continue the assault from an elevated (if unstable) vantage point.
Arguably the biggest new addition to the gameplay of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 though, is the ability to swim and submerge. Not only providing an additional space for combat to unfold, the water itself also makes a material difference to combat, allowing players to use water as a partial form of cover as the liquid disrupts bullet trajectories – making diving into a body of the stuff a wise tactical option indeed if the proceedings look like they’re going south.
Finally, a reworked Gunsmith 2.0 system fundamentally affects the manner in which weapon progression unfolds, offering universally compatible attachments that work with all firearms, thus no longer requiring players to endlessly grind each time a new weapon is brought into battle. It’s also certainly worth mentioning too that all of these changes have been fully implemented into Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 too, the sequel to the supremely popular Call of Duty: Warzone.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Hardcore Mode – How To Access
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s hardcore playlist has got a new name – Tier 1. However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s hardcore mode isn’t set to release until November 16, 2022, which marks the beginning of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s first season.
According to the official Call of Duty blogpost, the hardcore (well, Tier 1) playlists offer a “more challenging experience compared to traditional Multiplayer. Operators have less health and limited HUD elements, and friendly fire is on. These elements are consistent in all game modes that support the Tier 1 variant.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Crossplay – How To Disable Crossplay On PS4, PS5
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 supports crossplay across PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series platforms. To disable crossplay in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PS4 and PS5, you just need to perform the following steps:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Split-Screen – How To Play
Though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 does support split-screen local multiplayer (as you can see from the supported modes section above), getting it working requires a few steps to be followed.
To easily setup Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 split-screen on PS4 and PS5 consoles, simply follow these straightforward steps:
- Ensure that the second player has an active Activision account
- Make sure both controller have been turned on and have been connected/paired with your PS4 or PS5 console
- Boot up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and navigate to the main menu
- Press the Options button on the second controller and then log into the Activision account for that second player
- Split-screen play is now available on all of the modes detailed in the section above
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Zombies
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 does not currently support a Zombies mode. Instead, the previously detailed Special Operations mode has effectively replaced it for now. It is more likely however, that Zombies may return in the next Call of Duty title after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
